Sports Injury

"How Injured Athletes and Active Adults Can Get Fit (...And Stay Fit), From Nagging Sports Injuries That Keep You From Enjoying Sports And Being Active"

SPORTS INJURY COVER FINAL.png

If you have recently suffered from a Sports Injury, or have been suffering with an injury for several weeks or months - it can be very easy to think of it as something that "will eventually go away" and "put up with it" and continue the best you can.

Or, you might be ready to give up, with the mindset you'll never be able to get back to playing your sport or staying active like you used to...

If this is happening to you, you are not alone, we work with people going through the SAME thing all the time. The majority of our clients are suffering from injuries they sustained while playing sports or during exercise. I assure you we have seen just about every type of injury there is - and know how to help people recover and get back to the sport or activity they have been missing out on. The best time to start treatment for an injury is the NEXT DAY...

And this is completely opposite from the way most people are told to treat sports injuries by other healthcare professionals, and why so many people suffering with an injury ask themselves:

"It's Been Months...Why am I STILL Suffering From an Injury That is Stopping Me From Being Active and Playing Sports?"...

The majority of people think when they a Sports Injury, it will go away with a few days of rest. That one morning, when they wake up, it will be gone like "magic" and they will be able to return to their sport or exercise again. But then when they try to get back to exercise they are still restricted and sometimes it is worse than when the injury first happened. Often there is little to no pain at rest, but it keeps coming back when you try start getting active again no matter how much time you rest it.

Does That Sound Like You?

Another common story our physical therapists hear ALL THE TIME is when patients go to their doctor and they are told to rest, wear a brace and "try this pain medicine or muscle relaxer" and "see how it goes".

This is typically bad advice and 4 weeks later, the patient will go back to the doctor because their injury has not gotten any better. Even worse, they will often be given an even stronger pain medicine, and told to keep resting. This is ridiculous and explains exactly why the majority of active people suffering from an injury will never be free from limitations and pain during sport activity or exercise.

When it comes to sports injuries like hamstring tears, ankle sprains, runner's knee, etc., complete rest is almost always the worst advice.

You might be confused and frustrated because you have been told many different things, by various people. You may think you have a back problem, when it is likely your hip is where the problem came from?

Injuries from sports and exercise are often confusing, the majority of the time the area you feel pain is not actually where the problem started. Resting for too long can lead to other parts of your body becoming just as problematic...if not more!

The misunderstanding over "resting" will usually lead to continued procrastination in making a decision about what to do to "fix" their injury and get back to exercise. Even worse, most people end up accepting their days of being active are over, as if it's a normal thing.

Do You Feel That Way Too?

If You Are Currently Living with A Sports Injury, Here Are 7 More Reasons Why It Could Be Lasting Longer Than It Should:

  1.  You assumed it would probably go away on it's own - but it hasn't

  2.  You went to your doctor and were told to take pain meds and rest - but as soon as you stopped taking the meds, the pain came back or got worse

  3.  A friend or family member told you everyone is more likely to get injured as they get older and you just accept it

  4.  You've had treatments from other healthcare professionals, maybe a physical therapist or a   chiropractor, and nothing they said or did helped

  5.  You tried things like ice, heat, sport braces and they have not helped your pain or provided enough relief to return to sports or exercise

  6.  You thought resting it longer was a good idea, but it just made it more stiff and tight

  7.  You had a few sports massages, with the hope it would fix your pain, but it did not fix anything long-term

"What Can I Do To Get Back To Playing My Sport or Exercising Fast?"...

Well, here's 4 things you can do:

  1. Firstly, you need to make a decision to get help. Many people put off getting help for so long, thinking the pain might "just go away in time", but 6 months later they are still putting up with it, and nothing has changed...or it has gotten worse and they are still sitting out from sports or exercising completely.

  2. Second, do the RIGHT exercises - one the most beneficial things to help you recover safely and FAST from injuries is to do the right combination of exercises - the right exercises given to you by a Physical Therapist will help in reducing pain, and allow you to move more freely again fast - and make sure the problems do not come back anytime soon.

  3. Avoid long periods of rest - rest is important in the recovery process, but too much rest will not help you recover fast. Many people are under the impression that during recovery from an injury they should "totally" rest from exercise. But this is not the case and actually, injury recovery needs blood flow which complete rest prevents. It is really helpful to be given appropriate recovery and strengthening exercises to make sure you heal the injury and get back fast. This, along with hands-on treatments, will get you back to being active as quickly as possible.

  4. Get real, Hands-On Physical Therapy - Physical Therapy is proven to help people recover from Sports Injuries.
